Environmental biophysics of microorganisms

Many congratulations to Theresa who has passed her viva! Theresa's thesis explored theoretically, computationally and experimentally the transport of active particles in complex environments, realised by bacteria and microalgae swimming in microfluidic lattices.

One key theoretical result is that bacteria-like swimmers, by ricocheting between pillars of high density lattices, are able to diffuse as much as in the absence of obstacles (whereas the diffusion of classical particles is damped by the lattice) https://journals.aps.org/pre/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevE.99.012610
